Donald R. Bensley, 93, of Sioux City died Friday, May 3, 2013, at Northern Hills Assisted Living. Abiding by his wishes, he will be cremated, and there will be memorial services held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trimble United Methodist Church. Burial of his cremains will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Donald R. Bensley was born on April 15, 1920, in Cherokee, Iowa. In 1938, he graduated from East High School in Sioux City. He was a staff sergeant in the 34th Division serving in North Africa and Italy during World War II. In 1944, he married Irene F. Paulsen, and they lived happily in Sioux City until his death. Don was supervisor of the Hog Division of the Sioux City Stock Yards Company, where he worked for nearly 50 years, retiring in 1985. Don generously gave his time, energy, and resources to others. He was a longstanding member of Trimble United Methodist Church, where he served in numerous capacities including chairman of the board and was very active in youth ministries. He was president of a local Lions Club chapter and performed many other community services. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who enjoyed traveling with his family. He was interested in people and respected their differences, seeking to help others who were in need. He will be sorely missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his wife, Irene; his son, Alan and his wife, Nancy of Midland, Md.; his son, David and his wife, Marsha of Omaha; as well as seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
