SIOUX CITY, IOWA | Phyllis J. Gillespie, 65 of Sioux City died Monday, April 08, 2013 at a local hospital from breast cancer. Memorial services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with the Rev. Torey Lightcap officiating. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Condolences may be sent online at www.meyerbroschapels.com . Phyllis was born April 1, 1948 in Kansas City, MO the daughter of Walter and Edna (Boyd) Chatman. She grew up and graduated from Southeast High School in Kansas City. Phyllis graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia with a double major in mathematics and psychology. She met her future husband, Bob Gillespie while in college and was married on August 14, 1971 in Kansas City. They moved to Sioux City in 1976. Phyllis was a member of Junior League, Newcomers, and the Clark Elementary School PTA. She also taught Sunday school at St.Thomas. Phyllis was a longtime bridge player and belonged to numerous bridge groups. She was an avid tennis player and a longtime member of the Racket Club. She was also an avid walker. She loved catching up with friends over lunch. She had a reputation as a fabulous cook and hostess. Her most recent passion was the game of Mah Jongg. Survivors include her husband, Bob; a daughter and her husband, Ashley and Andrew Rich of New York City and their son, Arlo Rich; two brothers and their wives, Wally and Stephanie Chatman of Lee's Summit, MO and Joe and Jennifer Chatman of Clive, IA; a sister, Cheryl Cartner of Kansas City, MO; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Edna and her step-father, Everett Best. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the June E. Nylen Cancer Center or to the charity of your choice.
