Roger John McCoy

April 11, 1927 — March 29, 2013

Roger John McCoy, 85 of Sioux City, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013 at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness. Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3012 Jackson St. Rev. Merlin Schrad will officiate. Burial of the cremated remains will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd, with a vigil service at 7:00 P.M. Friday. Roger was born April 11, 1927 in Sioux City; he was the son of John J. and Dorothy (Meinert) McCoy. He attended St. Boniface Grade School and graduated from Trinity High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. Following his military service he attended business school in Norfolk, NE. Roger married Della Jane Hayes April 23, 1949 in Sioux City. He worked at Dennis Supply Company in Sioux City for many years and also worked for Sioux-Preme Pork Products in Sioux Center, IA, serving as Office Manager and Accountant for both companies. Roger was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City for over 50 years, and served the parish in many ways during that time. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family, and was very proud of all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Roger had a lifelong passion for the game of baseball, and followed the Sioux City Explorers closely. He was an avid golfer and long time member of the Sioux City Boat Club and Dakota Dunes Country Club, and had served on the Board of Directors for both clubs. Roger was also a skilled handyman, and devoted himself to caring for his home and those of his family. In retirement he delivered Meals on Wheels for several years, and served on their Board of Directors. He was proud of his service in the Navy, and flew the American flag daily. He was also proud of his Irish heritage, flying the Irish flag on St. Patrick's Day. Roger will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors. Survivors include his wife Della of Sioux City; 5 children: Kevin McCoy and his wife Denise of Omaha, NE, Sean McCoy and his wife Renee of Phoenix, AZ, Molly McCoy and her husband William Smialek of Tyler, TX, Jill O'Connor and her husband Marty of Leawood, KS, Kelly McCoy and his wife Robin of Papillion, NE; 2 sisters: Judy Thieme of Centennial, CO and Nancy Campbell of LaCrescenta, CA; 9 grandchildren: Kevin (Kara) Robinson, Jennifer (Richard)Voycheske, Ryan McCoy, Andrew Smialek, Adam Smialek, Shane O'Connor, Devin O'Connor, Shannon McCoy and Daniel McCoy; 3 great grandchildren: Ethan McCoy, Braden Robinson, and Aydia Voycheske. Roger was preceded in death by his parents; John and Dorothy McCoy; his brothers and sisters; John J. McCoy, Francis McCoy, Marian Connolly, Carlos Simpson, Mary Ellen McCoy, Dorothy Groves, Richard McCoy and John M. McCoy; and a granddaughter, Abigail Garcia. Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Parish or Trinity Heights/Queen of Peace in Sioux City.
