John M. Koson

July 4, 1932 — April 1, 2013

John M. Koson, 80 of Sioux City, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2013 at a local nursing facility. Graveside Services, with Military Honors will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Memorial Park Cemetery, 6605 Morningside Avenue, in Sioux City with Chaplain John Moravek officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel with family present at 6:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service will be Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. John was born on July 4, 1932 in Sioux City to Frank and Emma (Sikorski) Koson. He attended Sioux City Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1951. On November 25, 1952, John was united in marriage to Beverly (Cain) Koson at St. Francis Catholic Church. Shortly after their marriage, John served his country in Korea until 1954. While overseas, the couples' only child, Michael, was born. John was employed at Kind & Knox Gelatin for over 30 years until his retirement in the mid 1990's. John enjoyed volunteering for Sioux City Rivercade in the 1970's. He was honored for all of his hard work by being named Commodore in 1979. John had many God given talents that he put to good use. He was always handy around the house, he could build or repair just about anything. He loved to golf, work crossword puzzles, and to read novels. John also enjoyed following sports, especially the Hawkeyes, Bears, and the Pirates. When John wasn't doing some of the above, you could find him playing trivia at Bob Roe's Point After. Since his retirement, both he and Beverly became "snow-birds" in Arizona. They both loved getting away to warm Casa Grande every winter. John is survived by his wife Beverly of Sioux City; son Michael (Julie) Koson of Sioux City; grandchildren Paul (Emily) Koson of Sioux City, Kara (Nick) Recker of Racine, WI, Luke Koson and his companion Angie Vanlengen of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren Hayden and Reed Koson of Sioux City, Casey Recker of Racine, WI; brother Steve Koson of Sioux City; and sister-in-law Evelyn Koson of Sioux City. John was preceded in death by his parents, brother Todd Koson, nephew David Koson, and sister-in-law Marie Koson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack Huisenga, Bob Rehan Sr., Bill Crook, Wendell Roth, and Fred Frey. A Memorial will be established in John's honor at Camp High Hopes.
