NEWCASTLE, Neb. | Raymond A. Finnegan, 92, of Newcastle passed away on Good Friday, March 29, 2013, at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point, S.D. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Newcastle, with the Rev. David Liewer officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Newcastle. Visitation with the family present will begin 5:30 p.m. Monday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Parish Hall in Newcastle. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Raymond was born June 13, 1920, in Newcastle. He was the son of John and Celestine (Dougherty) Finnegan. He graduated from Newcastle High School. Raymond married Bernadine Shanahan on June 29, 1948, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ponca. They were blessed with seven children. He loved farming and raising cattle. Raymond enjoyed growing up and working the same farm his grandfather homesteaded in 1870. Ray and Bernadine built a new house on the farm in 1991. Raymond was a longtime member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He and Bernadine enjoyed traveling. One of the most memorable trips they took was to Ireland. He was proud to have traveled to 47 of the 50 states. Survivors include his wife, Bernadine of Newcastle; his children, Martin Finnegan and his wife Donna of Vermillion, S.D., Marilyn Foster and her husband Larry of South Sioux City, Patsy O'Neal and her husband Steve of Vermillion, S.D., Deanna Nelson and her husband Gregory of Ponca, Neb., Dan Finnegan and his wife Cindy of Cozad, Neb., Robert Finnegan and his wife Michelle of Newcastle, and Ron Finnegan and his wife Carol of Newcastle; 25 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Laurence, Emmett and Bill Finnegan; a sister, Lorene Brenner; and a grandson, Eric Cook. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
