Alice L. Veach, 82, of Sioux City died Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Sunrise Retirement Community following an 11-year battle with vascular dementia. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Nea Huggins officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home. Alice Leona Purdy was born on Aug. 1, 1930, in Des Moines, to Murrell (Davis) and William Edmund Purdy. She graduated from Des Moines North High School. Alice was united in marriage to Calvin Veach on Sept. 10, 1955, in Des Moines. They moved to Sioux City in 1957. She worked part-time as a billing clerk for Jolly Time Pop Corn and Mullin Manufacturing. Alice was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where she helped with the S.A.L.T. lunches. She was also very active at the Siouxland Ostomy Chapter. Alice loved to cook and bake for her family. She loved her pets, gardening and painting wood crafts made by Cal. Survivors include her husband, Calvin; daughters, Vickie (Randall) Williams of Sioux City, and Linda (David) Carruthers of Springfield, Minn.; granddaughters, Emily and Katie Carruthers of Des Moines; siblings, Jim Purdy, Carroll Purdy, Marion Calloway, and Lois Jean Hutchison; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Veach; sisters-in-law, Pauline Dwyer and Carletta Sauer; and many nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Kenneth Purdy, William Edmund "Junior" Purdy, Janet Barnes, and Marjory Jones. The family thanks the staff at Sunrise Retirement Community for the wonderful care given to Alice over the last several years.
