Clifford George Gustavson

March 21, 1925 — February 12, 2013

Clifford G. "Gus" Gustavson, 87 of Sioux City, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at his home following a short illness. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Reverend Tess Panamarow officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, February 15th from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the church, with family present at 6:00 p.m. A Prayer Service will be at the church at 7:00 p.m. on Friday Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is directing the service. Gus was born on March 21, 1925 in Sioux City to Fritz and Anna Marie (Lindbergh) Gustavson. He attended Sioux City Schools, graduating with the Class of 1943 from Central High. Gus served his country as a United States Marine in the Third Amphibious Corps, participating in action in Guam, the Mariana Islands, Okinawa, and the Ryukyu Islands before receiving his honorable discharge in November of 1945. He returned to Sioux City, attended Morningside College for two years before joining the crew at the Burke Lumber Company. Gus married Joan McColley on September 9, 1949 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sioux City, and to this union, five children were born. Gus enjoyed his career in the lumber industry for over 40 years, retiring in 1989 from the Walensky Lumber Company. Gus enjoyed the outdoors, enjoyed golfing, and bowling. He was one to stay busy with working around his house and around the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was treasurer of the church for 40 years, tinkered around the church on whatever needed repaired and enjoyed his membership and unselfish hours of volunteering at the church. Gus was a member of the Monahan American Legion Post 64 and of the Home Builders Association. Gus is survived by his wife Joan of Sioux City; son Bruce Gustavson and his wife Kalpana of Cedar Falls, Iowa; daughters Amy Gjerde and her husband Craig of Louisburg, Kansas, Jane Gustavson of Sioux City, and Ann Schneider and her husband Jim of Sioux City; sister-in-law Twila Gustavson of Sioux City; brother-in-law Robert Kvam of Columbia, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Gus was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Susan Uhl, brother Ray Gustavson, and sister Betty Kvam.
