James R. Fowkes

March 29, 1925 — January 22, 2013

James R. Fowkes, 87, of Sioux City, formerly of Scotland, SD; passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at a local Sioux City Hospital. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 25, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. with family present from 5-7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Goglin Funeral Home in Scotland, SD with a visitation one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the funeral home in Scotland, SD. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Paul Grosshuesch VFW Post #2966 in the Rosehill Cemetery at the Mausoleum in Scotland, SD. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online Condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com James was born on March 29, 1925 to Ed and Nora "Lust" Fowkes in Beatrice, Nebraska. He graduated from Scotland High School in Scotland, SD and went on to attend Purdue University and later graduated from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD. James proudly served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp restocking bombs on bomber planes. He was married to Myrna Muhmel in Scotland, SD in 1951. James worked various occupations in his life. He was most recently and retired in 1993 as a Librarian from Sioux City Schools he also taught social studies at North Jr. and West Jr. During the summers, he worked for Farmers Mutual as a Crop Hail Adjuster. He also was a volunteer fire fighter, owned and operated Jim's Standard Service. He also spent time as a farmer raising fox and mink. He was the Past Commander of the Paul Grosshuesch VFW Post #2966. James enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, reading and spending time with his family. James survived by his wife Myrna Fowkes of Sioux City, son James S. (Erin) Fowkes of Mitchell, SD; daughter Heidi (Jeff) Deignan of Sioux City; 4 grandchildren Amber, and Whitney Fowkes; Caitlyn and Conor Deignan; and 2 nephews Robert and Douglas Fowkes. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant sister and a brother Donald Fowkes.
