Lidiya Cherkas, 88 of Sioux City, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at a Sioux City hospital. Private services will be at St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Sioux City. Rev. Lucas Rice will officiate. Public visitation will be at St. Thomas Orthodox Church on Thursday January 10 2013 at 6:00 P.M. with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Lidiya was born July 1, 1924 in Minsk, Belarus; she was the daughter of Ivan and Sofia (Klochko) Ivashko. She grew up and lived most of her life in Belarus. She married Adam Cherkas in 1947 in Belarus. He died Nov. 29, 1989 in Belarus. Lidiya came to the United States in 1996. Lidiya was a member of St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Sioux City. She sang in the choir in the Orthodox Church in Minsk. Lidiya enjoyed knitting and canning but most of all spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by 3 daughters: Liudmila Pauliushchyk and her husband Viktar of Sioux City, Tasha Voloshen and her husband Victor of Sioux City, Sofia Prohorenia of Minsk, Belarus; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Cherkas, and her son, Alexander Cherkas.
