John Hubbard

March 25, 1926 — December 12, 2012

John H. Hubbard, 86, of Sioux City passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at Bickford Cottage. Abiding by his wishes, he will be cremated. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel with Rev. Darrin Vick officiating. Burial of his cremains will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Doon, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com John was born on March 25, 1926 in Eastland, TX to William M. and Modie L. (Hodges) Hubbard. He graduated from high school in Albuquerque, NM. After graduation, John joined the US Army and served his country during World War II. When he was honorable discharged from the service, he continued to serve his country in the Army National Guard until 1957. He was married to Helene Ross on June 1, 1946 in Albuquerque, NM, she preceded him in death on September 10, 1999 in Sioux City. John and his family moved to Sioux City in 1957 where he started working in the grocery business. After working for several grocery chains, John opened his own grocery store, Hubbard IGA and operated it until 1986. Working was what John took the most pride in. The hardest thing for him to do was retire in 2011 from Hy-Vee. Besides taking pride in his work, John and his wife owned and operated Danceland for many years in Sioux City bringing joy to many people. John and Helene loved taking their grandchildren on vacations. He is survived by his son Mark (Pat) Hubbard of Sioux City; granddaughter Kim (Jarrod) Friloux of Luling, LA; grandson Andrew Hubbard of Omaha, NE; and a great grandson Kevin Friloux. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and 2 brothers. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
