He graduated from Central High School and attended both Western Iowa Tech Community College and the University of South Dakota. One of his professional highlights was selling advertising for various sports teams around the area. He had most recently resided at Prime Living on Pearl Street. He loved to tell jokes and greet people by name; he enjoyed reading and was an avid hockey, baseball and wrestling fan. He also enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends, whether it was over the phone or a cup of Caribou Coffee. He especially treasured being a 33-year friend of Bill W, which led to many deep friendships. Tom enjoyed many jokes and friendships with the people he encountered in his daily lifewait staff, health care professionals, and others (you know who you are!). His life was enhanced in recent years by the P.A.C.E. program, and this brought him a greater sense of independence and stability. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Tom is survived by his father John Hassebroek of Sioux City; sister Valerie (Jerry) Vagts, of St. Paul, MN; 2 nieces Rachel and Amalia (David Lester); 2 nephews Thatcher (Kelly) and Paul (Indra Souvereyns); 5 great nieces and nephews Kaya, Pierson, Oran, Aidan and Finn; cousins, and a wide and diverse circle of friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Bonnie in 2008. Tom's family expresses their deep gratitude for all who worked with and supported Tom throughout his life.
