Lucille F. Sierk

April 18, 1918 — December 9, 2012

Lucille Frieda (Krohn) Sierk of Sioux City, formerly of Sutherland, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at a Sioux City area care facility from complications of an infection. A memorial service will be held Dec. 17 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with family visitation from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by a short service. Lucille, the second child of Gus and Alma (Wiese) Krohn, was born April 1, 1918, on a farm four miles north of Osmond in Pierce County, Neb. At the age of 3, she moved with her parents to a farm southeast of Bloomfield, Knox County, Neb., where she lived for 18 years. She received schooling in the Bloomfield schools. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. After leaving Bloomfield, she lived for several years in Sioux City and did defense work at the Wincharger Plant during World War II. On Aug. 27, 1942, Lucille married Raymond W. Sierk at Dakota City, Neb. Lucille and Ray had three children, Donna Rae, Damon and Dennis. The family moved from Nebraska to Sioux City, where they lived for 10 years. They then moved successively to Meriden, Sutherland and Gaza, Iowa. She lived in Gaza for 30 years. She worked and managed the general store at Cherokee Mental Health Institute for many of those years, retiring in 1980. After Ray's death in September of 1991, Lucille moved to Sutherland for the next 20 years. For many of those years, she was active as site manager for the Sutherland Agency for Senior Citizens. She was also an active member of Straight 8 Card Club, Cheerful Workers, Bethel Lutheran Church Helping Hand and Tripoli Club. Lucille enjoyed her hobbies of hand quilting, knitting, crocheting and sewing most of her own clothes. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Donna Rae and special friend David Stavert of St. Louis Park, Minn., Damon and Carol Sierk of Sioux City and Dennis and special friend Carol Peterson of Midvale, Utah; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; her sister, Sylvia; and many nieces, nephews and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Wesley, Warner and Willard; and three sisters, Arnieta, Shirley and Bernise.
