Eugene Paul Shultz, 59, of Westfield died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, after suffering a massive heart attack. Gene's life will be celebrated with an informal gathering of family and friends at St. Peter's Community Center, 400 Main St. Jefferson, SD at noon on Wednesday, December 12, 2012. Gene managed his business, Set in Steele Engraving and also served as Veteran's Affairs Administrator at the Plymouth County Court House. He proudly served in the United States Army, receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1976. Earlier in his life, Gene served as a certified welder and was employed at IPS/Midwest Power before he started his own business S & S Welding. Later he worked for KD Nutra Flo. After staff reductions, he turned his hobby into a profitable business, Set in Steele Engraving, engraving Western pieces for customers throughout the United States. Gene spent his life, much like his engraving, with Christ carving his character and smoothing rough edges anew each day. He enjoyed old movies, especially with the Duke, and long talks on his porch with friends and family. Gene was an inspiration to his grandkids, especially inspiring them to draw like their papa. He took his time to be there for every facet of his grankids' livescheer meetings, Christmas programs, rides home. Gene's surviving legacy includes his wife, Dianna of Westfield; three children, Chandee Slater and her husband, Rodd of McCook Lake, SD and their sons, Cash and Atticus; Wade Shultz and his wife, Desiree of Westfield, IA and their children, Maciah, Ziva, Boden, and Gili; Cecily Ketchens and her husband Rod of Sioux City, IA and their daughter, Simone; brother-in-law Tom Young of Peoria, AZ; and his parents, Merle and Rose Shultz of Onawa, IA. He was preceded in death by his sister Patricia Patty' Bumsted-Young and brother-in-law Richard Bumsted.
