Mildred E. Hathaway, 94 of Sioux City, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2012 at a local care facility. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, September 6, 2012 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Pastor Nea Huggins and Pastor Laurice Streyffeler officiating. Following a luncheon at the church, interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is today, Wednesday, September 5th at Wesley United Methodist Church from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. this evening, all at the church. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com Mildred was born on August 3, 1918 in Sioux City to Peter J. and Selma C. (Petersen) Wanders. She received her education in Sioux City, graduating with the Central High School Class of 1937. Mildred played basketball in the city recreation leagues in the 1940's for Mann Sporting Goods. She worked as a secretary at Hathaway Bottling for 11 years before her marriage to Harold L. Hathaway in 1948 in Sioux City. To this union, three sons were born, Peter, Robert, and Joel. Mildred enjoyed being a homemaker while raising her sons, and she loved to bake, especially pies. Church activities, women's groups, and church choir were very important parts of Mildred's life. For the past 14 years she was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Mildred was proud of her membership in the United Methodist Women and several Women's Circles throughout her life. She was a caregiver who took care of her husband and her mother while raising her sons. Following her husband's death, Mildred worked at First Federal Savings and Loan. Mildred is survived by her sons Peter Hathaway and his wife Ann of Sioux City, Robert Hathaway of Elk Point and his fiancé Mary McGinnis, and Joel Hathaway and his wife Jane of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister Dorothy Tague of King City, Oregon; daughter-in-law Helen Hathaway of Sioux City; grandchildren Holly Roberts and her husband Ryan of Des Moines, Iowa; Eric Hathaway and his wife Jennifer of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Dr. Christopher Hathaway and his wife Casandra of Yankton, South Dakota; Sarah Meland and her husband Matt of Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska; John Hathaway and his wife Renee of Bennet, Nebraska; Kayla Hathaway of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Justin Hathaway of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and 7 great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold in 1966, daughter-in-law Deborah Hathaway, sisters Frances Newell, Florence Uecker, and Elaine Crawford, and longtime friend Hazel Olsen, god-mother to Mildred's sons.
