Charles A. Vakulskas Sr., 85, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, at a Sergeant Bluff nursing home. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Church of the Nativity, with the Rev. John Vakulskas officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Navy. Chuck was born Dec. 25, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of Anthonas and Mary Anna (Penevicuite) Vakulskas. He attended Cooper Grade School in Sioux City, and graduated from Trinity High School in 1945. In 1944, he entered the Navy and served four years on the USS Warrick as a radio operator 1st class. He was involved with the U.S. occupation forces in Japan. He married Georgia Lea Quint on Jan. 16, 1949. She preceded him in death Feb. 22, 1987. They had six children, Charles Jr., Robert, Jeannie, Patricia, Michael and Gerald. Chuck and Georgia moved to their home in the country six miles east of Sioux City. It was the scene of many family gatherings. Chuck worked for The Sioux City Journal as a pressman for more than 20 years. He worked for Mid-American Energy as an assistant panel operator, retiring in 1987 after 15 years. He enjoyed throwing "shoes" and playing snooker with his children and grandchildren. Later in life he became an accomplished ballroom dancer. Survivors include his children and grandchildren.
