Dorothy A. Comeau

SIOUX CITY -- Dorothy A. Comeau, 88, of Clarkfield, Minn., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Clarkfield Care Center after a brief illness. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with Pastor Gary Kurka officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be posted online at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Dorothy was born September 25, 1923, in Rowena, S.D., the daughter of Andrew and Bertha (Reinhart) Athas. She moved to Sioux City with her family as a young child and attended Sioux City schools. She graduated from Central High School in 1941. On June 22, 1942, she married Vinton A. Comeau in Pender, Neb. She enlisted with the U.S. Navy and received her training in San Francisco. She served as a hospital apprentice dispensing medication. After her discharge from the navy, she returned to Sioux City and worked for Kalins and Younkers for a short time before starting a family. Vinton passed away October 5, 1982, in Sioux City. Dorothy had resided in Clarkfield for the past three years. Dorothy was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary No. 77 and was active on their drill team. She was a member of the Siouxland Senior Center. Dorothy was an avid card player, enjoyed embroidering dishtowels and loved to travel. In earlier years, she was involved in PTA and was past president. Survivors include three children and their spouses, Vinton (Karen) Comeau of Wasilla, Alaska, Sherry (Merlin) Smith of Granite Falls, Minn., and LeeAnn (Richard) Kneifl of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, Vinton Comeau II, Daphne Comeau, Travis (Sue) Smith, Tremayne (Maria) Smith, Teresa Smith, Brigett Kneifl, Richard (Andrea) Kneifl and Hollie (Jason) Smith; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and two sisters, Hazel (Friedel) Bolte and Mary C. Hills. Pallbearers will be Travis Smith, Richard Kneifl, Jason Smith, Donovan Smith, Tyler DeVos and Justin Kling. Honorary pallbearers will be Vinton Comeau II, Tremayne Smith, Keanu Smith and Daphne Comeau. Memorials may be made in her name to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Hospice.
