SIOUX CITY -- Simon J. "Bud" Hughes, 98, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Countryside Senior Living. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Neptune, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Bud was born Jan. 30, 1914, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Simon P. and Elizabeth (Welter) Hughes. The family moved to Howard, S.D., where he attended school. He worked for his uncles on the farm until he began working with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills. He worked for the U.S. Forestry Service there. He was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II. Bud married Pearl Ruby Soderberg on Aug. 16, 1945, in Jefferson, S.D. She died on April 5, 2005. Bud worked for Cudahay's, Armour and Co. and then Cloverleaf Cold Storage. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for more than 50 years. He was a member of the V.F.W., and a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was a member of the B-25 Bomber Group and was a lifetime member of the 57th Bomber Wing. He enjoyed going to the dog races. Survivors include five sisters, Leone Recktor of Flagstaff, Ariz., Martha Truhe of Jefferson, S.D., Nora Van Verth of Des Moines, Delores Garrod and her husband, Lou of Tigard, Ore., and Anna Nichols and her husband, Nick of Knoxville, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Shirley Pluimer and her husband, Jim of Lodi, Calif.; 30 nieces and nephews; and many grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pearl; a brother, Francis; and two sisters, Rita Bourassa and Sister Zita. Pallbearers will be Dave Bourassa, Mark Weiner, Bill Clemons, Don Truhe, Joe Truhe Sr., and Joe Truhe Jr. Memorials may be made in his name to Hospice of Siouxland or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
