Richard A. Eckert

Richard A. Eckert, 85, of Sioux City passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Countryside Senior Living. Memorial services for Richard will be on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Roger Madden officiating. There will be no visitation and burial of his cremains will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com Richard was born on April 21, 1926, in Sioux City, to Albert and Lois (Deuel) Eckert. He graduated from Central High School and attended Iowa State University. After graduation, he served his country in the National Guard. During World War II, he was in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and the U.S. NAS Pearl Harbor Theater. He was married to Dorothy Moyle on June 2, 1946. He was later married to Lou Ann (Soderstrom) Sorenson on July 11, 1967, in Sioux City. Richard owned and operated R.A. Eckert Insurance Agency. Richard enjoyed golfing and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and a member of the I-Club for many years. He was also a member of the Abu Bekr Shriners, Sertoma Lodge, Sioux City Country Club and First United Methodist Church. Richard is survived by his wife, Lou Ann Eckert; eight children, John Richard Eckert, Ronald Robert Eckert and Sally (Kevin) Eckert-Smith, all of California, Debby (Howard) Huisinga of Parkersburg, Iowa, Diane Sorenson of Sioux City, Eric (Patricia) Sorenson of Clearwater, Fla., Jill (Richard) Shepherd of Trophy Club, Texas, and Kirk (Maura) Sorenson of Stuart, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois; father, Albert and his second wife, Esther Macfarland; a brother, Robert E.; and an infant son. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Siouxland or First United Methodist Church in Sioux City.
