SIOUX CITIY -- Mildred H. Scherner, 97 of Sioux City, IA passed away Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 at Sunrise Retirement Community after a brief illness. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012 at Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. James Travis officiating. Burial will be in Rademacher (Hungerford Twp.) Cemetery, rural Hinton, IA. Visitation with the family present will be the hour prior to the service at church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is handling arrangements. Condolences may be made online at www.meyerbroschapels.com . Mildred was born March 7, 1914 in Plymouth County, IA the daughter of Henry and Matilda (Bornholz) Junck. She attended country school in Plymouth County. On March 3, 1934 she married Dean L. Scherner in Elk Point, SD. Dean was badly wounded in WWII. Mildred spent months and years with Dean as he was being treated in VA Hospitals around the country. The couple was able to enjoy many happy summers at their lake home on Lake Marian, MN. Together they enjoyed the company of many friends. Dean passed away November 1, 1978 in Sioux City. Mildred worked as a seamstress including Fishgalls. She lived in Leeds for many years where she has been a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church. After selling her house in Leeds she resided at Northern Hills Independent Living for 14 years, about a year at Char-Mac Assisted Living in Lawton and most recently at Sunrise Retirement Community. Mildred was very popular among family and friends. She was known for her sense of humor, for example, of the four girls in her family, she always joked that she was "The Pretty One". Mildred loved playing cards. Survivors include 2 sisters, LaVaun Goodwin of Lawton, IA and Lucille Eberly of Sioux City, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 infant sons (1938 and 1945), her parents, 2 sisters, Irene Vanderloo and Betty McNaughton, 4 brothers, Frank, Clarence, Martin and Irvin Junck. Pallbearers will be Terry Goodwin, Darryl Junck, Craig McNaughton, Brian McNaughton, Curt Vanderloo and Virgil Vanderloo. Honorary pallbearers will be Link Eberly and Keith Vanderloo. Memorials may be made in her name to Calvary Lutheran Church Projection System or Hospice of Siouxland.
