SIOUX CITY -- Edgar Anthony Flammang, 92, of Sioux City, formerly of Lawton, Iowa, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Church of the Nativity, with the Rev. Steven McLoud officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Naval Reserves. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary at 4 p.m., the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Edgar, the son of Nick and Anna (Keitges) Flammang, was born near Danbury, Iowa, on November 20, 1919. He attended rural schools and St. Mary's Catholic School in Mapleton, Iowa. On November 20, 1944, he married Esther Glover at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Rectory in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Edgar was a lifelong farmer. He farmed in the Lawton area for more than 37 years, moving to Sioux City in 1984. Edgar was a member of Church of the Nativity, where he served as an usher, the Men's Club, the Carmel Guild, was a 60-year member of American Legion Post 718 in Lawton, and the Siouxland Center for Active Generations. He also was a member of the 500 Card Club, and a former charter member of the Lawton bowling league. He was a former member of the Sioux City Eagles, and a former member and president of Lawton-Bronson School board. He was a Cargill and Midwest Genetics seed dealer. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, dancing, hunting, fishing, traveling and watching the Sioux City Explorers baseball games. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Esther (Glover) Flammang; four children, Kevin (Diane) Flammang of Orange City, Iowa, Kristin (Kenny) Klug of South Sioux City, Kirk (Nancy) Flammang of Lawton, and Kerry (Mike) Ruehle of Sioux City; grandchildren, Jessica (Dustin) Campbell, Jennifer (Terry) VandeVegte, Peter (Jaimee) Vonk, Karen Vonk (fiance, Dustin Hubbling), Lisa (Kyan) Heck, Laura (Matthew) Benson, Jenny Flammang, Dr. Rhett Ruehle, Ashley Ruehle, and Nathan Ruehle; great-grandchildren, Braden Heck, Wesley Benson, Carter, Graham, Micah nd Rylan VandeVegte, Peter Jr. and Jude Vonk, Hallie Pergande, and Leighton Hubbling; and his siblings, Monica Smith of Papillion, Neb., Mary Gormally and Jerry Flammang of Arvada, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Coletta in infancy, Elizabeth Uhl, Teresa Sachau and Rita Ferdig; and a brother, Matthew. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
