Frederick (Fred) Christian Hansen, 97, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2011, surrounded by family. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Redeemer Lutheran Church with Reverend Russell Senstad officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Friday, November 25, 2011 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Military graveside services will be at Memorial Park Cemetery conducted by the Iowa National Guard and American Legion Morningside Post 697 . Fred was born October 5, 1914 in Schleswig, Iowa the son of Andrew and Anna (Petersen) Hansen. When Fred was two years old he moved to the Danbury vicinity. In 1926, he moved to Danbury, Iowa to finish his education. He graduated from Danbury Public School in 1932. He worked for his father in the blacksmith shop he operated. He enlisted in the military January 22, 1942. He served in the Army Air Corps, and was sent overseas for thirty months, serving mostly in Italy. He entered the military as a welder, but later became a company clerk. He was discharged October 19, 1945. Fred went to Schaller, Iowa to work in the Bennett Welding Shop for a year. He then moved to Battle Creek, Iowa where he bought half interest in a blacksmith shop. Fred married Margaret Bjorholm on September 2, 1945 in Battle Creek, IA. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1961, where he owned and operated two laundromats in the area. He later worked for Zenith Television Corp until it closed in 1978. He also loved his job of babysitting for two granddaughters and one neighbor boy until they started school. Fred enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, word search and crossword games, solitaire games, and was a very competitive Wii bowler. He enjoyed being a care reviewer for a number of years, and a member of the Senior Center and AARP and was a very active member of the American Legion Morninside Post 697. Fred is survived by his three sons: Donald and wife Molly Hansen of Kansas City, MO; James "Jim" and wife Rhona Hansen of Runnells, IA; and Keith and wife Kim Hansen of Sioux City, IA; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margaret of 65 years, a daughter Carol Jean Den Beste, son Robert Eugene Hansen, two sisters Ida Furne and Freida Andresen, and several nieces and nephews.
