SIOUX CITY -- Kathryn "Kate" Jeanette Lind, 83, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at her Morningside home, after having fought a tough battle against cancer with grace and dignity. Per Kate's and the family's wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Kate was born Nov. 21, 1927, in French Lick, Ind., to Phillip and Sadie (Burton) Crecelius. She graduated from Medaryville High School in Medaryville, Ind., in May 1945. Following a calling into the medical profession, she graduated from the Louisville General Hospital (LGH) School of Nursing in 1950 as a registered nurse. Kate worked on the staff at LGH for a few months then moved to Memphis, Tenn. That summer, while doing private duty, there was a polio outbreak ... this was before the polio vaccine was available. The Red Cross asked for volunteers to help combat this menace, and Kate was sent to Asheville, N.C., where she stayed most of that year. When the crisis eased she returned to Memphis, where she met her future husband, Richard W. Lind. They were married in December 1950, and she became a military wife. When the children came along, it was mutually agreed that Kate would be a full-time mom and homemaker, an arrangement that worked well for them. Eventually she was able to return to nursing after taking long refresher courses. She worked on the medical surgery floor at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis for several years, and then worked private duty for many more years before finally retiring in 1994. Kate always considered others, especially her family, before herself. Her heart was pure, loving, and generous. She never really retired, but worked continuously to make sure her family's (and others') needs were met, mental and physical. Kate is survived by her husband, Richard W. Lind; a son, Michael E. Lind of Littlerock, Calif.; daughters, Pat and husband, Roger Kreisler of Sergeant Bluff and Jessie L. Lind of Sioux City; her sister, Helen Myers of Seymour, Ind.; a brother, Paul W. Crecelius and his wife, Maxine of Rapid City, S.D.; many nieces and nephews and their children. She is also survived by a special little dog, Buddy, who was the apple of her eye. Kate was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, Jess, Charles, and Fred. Memorial donations may be made to favorite charities or the Siouxland Humane Society.
