SIOUX CITY -- Helen Fisher Edwards, 93, of Sioux City passed away Oct. 11, 2011, at a local care facility. According to her wishes, the body was cremated. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 at Trimble United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating. Private family graveside services will be in Kennebec Cemetery, Castana, Iowa. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Helen Joyce Powers was born Jan. 28, 1918, in Castana, to John W. Powers and Jeanette A. (Springer) Powers. She was the youngest of 10 children. She graduated from Castana High School in 1934. After graduation, she moved to Sioux City. During World War II, she worked for the 817th Specialized Depot, where she met her future husband. She married Henry Harold Fisher on Jan. 23, 1945. While their two children were young, she was a mother and homemaker. Later, she owned and operated Commerce Printing and Stationary and Gateway Supply, a wholesale gift company, with Henry for several years. In 1975, she was named Business Woman of the Year of the Sioux City chapter of the American Business Women's Association. Her husband, Henry, died in 1979. Helen married Roland W. Edwards on June 14, 1986, in Yakima, Wash. They enjoyed traveling, theatre, bingo and visiting friends and family. They especially enjoyed visits to Roland's family in Yakima and Helen's family in Seattle, Wash., each June for many years. Helen was quite proud of the fact that she attended at least one play each summer at the Okoboji Summer Theatre for the last 40 years. Her husband, Roland, died in 2001. In 2005, she moved to Independent Living at Northern Hills. Helen greatly appreciated her friendships with many of her fellow residents. She enjoyed several activities, especially penny bingo and Rummikub. Helen belonged to Trimble United Methodist Church for more than four decades. She was active in Esther Circle and served on pastor parish. She was a board member of Shesler Hall. Survivors include her son, Harrison Fisher and his wife, Joyce and her son, Brad of Sioux City; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Larry Edwards and his wife, Joan of Goldbeach, Ore., and Susan McGuire and her husband, Mike of Yakima. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Jeanette; five sisters, Gladys Powers, Ruth Olson, Marjorie Powers, Doris Farris and Wilda Jessup; four brothers, Lester, Theodore, Sidney and Robert; and a stepson, Bill Edwards.
