Richard D. Vanderloo

Richard Dean "Rich" Vanderloo, 68 of Sioux City, IA passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011 at a local hospital after a long illness. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2011 at Morningside Lutheran Church with Rev. Dave Denzer officiating. A private family burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday with the family present 5:00-8:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. all at the church. Condolences may be posted online at www.meyerbroschapels.com . Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel is handling arrangements. Rich was born July 24, 1943 in Le Mars, IA the son of Clarence J. and Irene Ida (Junck) Vanderloo. He graduated from Le Mars High School and attended the University of Iowa on a baseball scholarship. He transferred to Morningside College where he graduated in 1965. He married Patricia K. Gengler on April 30, 1961 in Sioux City. Rich began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the University of North Dakota's basketball team. He moved on to coach basketball for two seasons at Baldwin-Woodville High School in Wisconsin. He returned to the Sioux City area and spent two years as the head basketball coach at Cherokee. In the fall of 1974 he made his final transition to Sioux City East High School. There he spent 31 years, twenty of those were spent as the school's athletic director. He totaled 13 years as the school's head basketball coach in two different stints. Rich was one of the main people responsible for reviving the Sioux City Relays and he played an important part in creating the youth basketball league, Hayworth Hoops. Since his retirement in 2005, he was instrumental in the formation of a middle school athletics program in Sioux City On the side, he started his own private business, which provided materials and instructions that have helped stripe the three-point shooting arcs on almost 14,000 gyms around the world. Rich was past president of the Iowa High School Basketball and Coaches Association. He was admitted to the Iowa Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, Morningside College Hall of Fame and the Sioux City Relays Hall of Fame. He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church. In addition to his passion for sports and his love for East High School, Rich enjoyed watching all of his children and grandchildren's activities. Survivors include his wife, Pat of 48 years; 4 sons and their wives, Jeff and Kori Vanderloo of Omaha, NE, Ras and Kathy Vanderloo, John and Jen Vanderloo and Jim and Jody Vanderloo all of Sioux City; 9 grandchildren, Jordan, Jaci, Tyler, Ashley, Blake, Hanna, Aidan, Bennett and Carter; 6 siblings and their spouses, Virg and Norma Vanderloo of Ackley, IA, Bonnie and Morrie Blum , Stan Vanderloo, Curt and Marlene Vanderloo, Keith and Carol Vanderloo, Glenda and Don Donlin all of Merrill, IA; a brother-in-law, Wendell Blankenburg of Des Moines, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Jan Blankenburg and a sister-in-law, Geraldine Vanderloo. Pallbearers will be his family. Memorials may be made in his name to the Sioux City Middle School Athletics.
