Lorraine Mahaffy, 83 of Streator, Illinois, formerly of Sioux City, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2011 at a nursing facility comforted by family. A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Father Michael Erpelding as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 6th at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with family present at 6:00 p.m. Vigil Services will be at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Online condolences for the family may be offered at www.meyerbroschapels.com Lorraine was born on June 24, 1928 in Winnepeg, Manitoba Canada to Hans E. and JoHanna (Trapp) Peterson. The family moved to Iowa, and Lorraine received her education at Central High School in Sioux City. She married William "Bill" Mahaffy on February 7, 1948 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Due to her husband having a United States Air Force career, the family lived in numerous areas including Topeka, KS, Rome, NY, Puerto Rico, Bangor, ME, and Rapid City, SD. Lorraine worked at several companies throughout her history including Western Union, S.S.Kresge Company, Sioux City Bakery, and Zenith. She enjoyed her membership to St. Boniface Catholic Church, along with the local V.F.W. Lorraine was a wonderful mother, loving all of her children and found time to enjoy bowling at the Plaza for Bob Roe's and playing second base on a softball league. Lorraine loved the Chicago Cubs. In the past few years she had been living in Streator, IL to be close to family. Lorraine is survived by her children Gloria Gubbels and her husband Robert of Streator, IL, William Mahaffy and his wife Deanna of Sturgis, SD, Anna Cameron and her husband Bruce of Des Moines, IA, and Mary Doucette and her husband Joe of Elko, NV; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson (born the day that Lorraine passed away); sisters Dorothy Walters, Carol Peterson, Lois Ward and her husband John, brothers Donald Peterson and his wife Norma, Edward Peterson, Gary Peterson and his wife Gloria, and Jerry Stillwell; many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly; and a friend that she loved as a sister, Mary Lou Barrett. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, brothers Bob Peterson, James "Tuffy" Peterson, and Ronald Peterson, sisters Joyce Stillwell and Mary Stading.
