SIOUX CITY -- Mildred W. Wallman, 91, of Sioux City died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, in the Hospice Unit of Touchstone Living Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. Private burial was in Logan Park Cemetery. Mildred was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Graettinger, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Emma (Luhman) Wikert. She grew up in Graettinger and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1937. She graduated in 1941 with a degree in education from Morningside College, where she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. Mildred did graduate work at the University of Northern Iowa and the University of South Dakota. She married Garrett R. Wallman on Oct. 3, 1944, in Graettinger. He died June 26, 1995, in Sioux City. After college, Mildred worked for United Airlines in San Francisco. She taught at U.S. Armed Forces Institute in Long Island, N.Y. She returned to Iowa and taught at Schleswig, Iowa, Graettinger and Morningside College. Mildred developed and taught the medical secretary program at Western Iowa Tech Community College while serving on their faculty. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the KE Chapter of P.E.O. She was a longtime member of the Sioux City Boat Club and Dakota Dunes Country Club. She volunteered in many organizations during the years. Survivors include her son, James D. Wallman of Sioux City; her daughter, Julie (Steve) Schneider of Dakota Dunes; her brother, Richard O. (Marty) Wikert of Fremont, Neb.; four grandchildren, Amy Bales, Lee (Ashley) Bales, Emily Schneider and Elizabeth Schneider. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett; her parents; a sister, Wilma; and a brother, Ervin. Memorials may be directed to the scholarship funds at Morningside College or Western Iowa Tech Community College.
