James Mandicino, Sr.

November 30, 1923 — June 20, 2011

SIOUX CITY -- James Mandicino Sr., 87, of Sioux City died Monday, June 20, 2011, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 24. 2011 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 662 of Sergeant Bluff. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. James was born Nov. 30, 1923, in Sergeant Bluff, the son of Frank and Jennie (Verardi) Mandicino. He grew up in Sergeant Bluff and attended Sergeant Bluff High School. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Elma A. Hindman Sept. 4, 1941, in South Sioux City. Jim worked for Metz Baking for more than 20 years. He was a master plumber in the pipe trades for 40 years. He was a member of Local 18 (now Local 33). He had been a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa. Most important to Jim were his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed spending time with them at his home on Brown's Lake. He enjoyed boating, swimming, working in his yard and garden and fixing just about anything in his garage. Another love of Jim's was making homemade bread, pizza and crespelles, and sharing them with family and friends. He also coached weightlifting for Heelan High School in the CYO. Survivors include his wife, Elma of Sioux City; a son, James Mandicino Jr. and his wife Diane of Sioux City and their children, James Allen Mandicino, Jeff (Sherri) Mandicino, Annette (Dale) Bosse and Shellie (Ben) Martin; a daughter, Vicki Bornholtz and her husband Von of Sioux City and their children, Justin (Jessica) Bornholtz and Jill Bornholtz; a daughter, Gina Smith and her husband Steve of Le Mars, Iowa, and their children, Jennifer Howe, Taylor Smith and Shannon Smith; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister-in-law, Peggy Mandicino of Sioux City; brother-in-law, Leonard Johnson of Sergeant Bluff; numerous nieces and nephews; and many cousins in Italy, Canada and Australia. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dominick and Frank; a sister, Elizabeth Johnson; a son-in-law, Lance Jorgensen; and a great-grandson, Dominick James Mandicino. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce Johnson, Chris Johnson, Rick Schroeder, Larry Axlund and Richard "Buster" Towns. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
