SIOUX CITY -- Helen H. Mason, 97, of Sioux City died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday 17, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger Madden of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Helen was born Nov. 25, 1913, in Davenport, Iowa, to Charles and Anna (Ohlsen) Holmgren. She graduated high school from Davenport, Iowa, and Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Phi Beta Kappa. She married the Rev. Dr. Charles E. Mason on June 19, 1938, in Davenport. He preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 2003. Helen taught high school in Liscomb, Iowa, was a homemaker and worked in food service at Morningside College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where her husband, the Rev. Dr. Charles E. Mason served as pastor for many years. She was a member of U.M.W. and taught Sunday school. She was active in the P.E.O. for more than 60 years, was a St. Luke's auxiliary volunteer for more than 25 years and a member of the Sioux City Museum. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, sewing and cooking. Survivors include two sons, Larry Mason of Sioux City, and Dr. Chuck Mason and his wife, Patty of Sun City, Ariz.; two daughters, Beth and her husband, Dr. H.D. Mitchell of Downers Grove, Ill., and Debby and her husband, Dr. Greg Landau of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one brother, Len Holmgren and his wife, Edith of Davenport, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Dr. Charles Mason IV, Kathy Jo Burk, Suzanne Peterson, Rob Mason, Lt. Col. Rebecca Fox, Steve Mitchell, Dr. Brent Landau, Brian Landau and Liz Landau; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters; and one grandson, David Mitchell. Memorials may be made in her name to First United Methodist Church, Sioux City, IA, or P.E.O. Sisterhood, Education Loan Fund, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA.
