Donald B. Higgins, 85, of Sioux City passed away Friday, May 20, 2011, at his residence following a brief battle with cancer. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2011 at Crescent Park United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Scott Squires officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Navy Reserves. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Monday at the church. Donald was born Oct. 14, 1925, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of John and Belle (Engebretson) Higgins. He grew up in Sioux Falls and came to Sioux City at the age of 13. He attended Central High School and then joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the South Pacific during World War II aboard the USS Honolulu. He married Nellie McCline on June 28, 1947, in Omaha, Neb. She died on Aug. 31, 2009, in Sioux City. Donald was vice president of Hanson Glass & Paint for 22 years. He then worked for Team Ford. After his retirement, he was a driver for Senior Companion. Donald was a member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church for 60 years. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. Survivors include three children, Bob Higgins and his wife, Karen of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Scott Higgins and his wife, Aimee of Cary, Ill., and Nancy Higgins of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren, Erika Filipkowski, Will, Claire and Ross Higgins; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Jake; and one sister, Darlene Bay of Sioux City. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nellie; and three brothers, Ralph, Kenny and Lyle.
