Dennis E. Smith, Sr.

SIOUX CITY -- Dennis E. Smith Sr., 72, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, May 8, 2011, at his residence. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. Dennis was born Jan. 29, 1939, in Barnett, Mo., the son of Bernard and Christina (Wingert) Smith. Dennis married Paulette Brooks in 1970. She preceded him in death in 1999. Dennis worked for Cargill for a number of years. He loved animals, especially his dog, Spotty. He spent time rebuilding lawn mowers, fishing and gardening. His greatest joy was spent with his family and his granddaughter, Joezee. Survivors include his sons, Joe Smith of Sioux City, Dennis Smith and his wife, Stephanie of Holstein, Iowa, Anthony and his wife, Amanda of Holstein, and Mike and his wife, Mandy Nichols of Sioux City; daughters, Sarah and her husband, Justin Turner of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Christine and her husband, Paul Herfel of Sioux City; a stepson, Douglas and his wife, Debra Kesler of Crestview, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Johna and her husband, Sam Parker of Sioux City; a brother, John Smith; a sister, Alvina Barbie; 27 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Debra Coffman; a granddaughter; four brothers, Drius, Roy, Mancel and Vernice; and two sisters, Christina and Darlene Jones. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Sioux City Humane Society.
