William "Bill" Zeplain

January 29, 1919 — February 19, 2008

William "Bill" Zeplain, 89, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, following a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Memorial services will be 11:45 a.m. Thursday, February 21, 2008, at Congregation Beth Shalom, with Rabbi Guy Greene officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. today in Graceland Park Cemetery, Independent Farane section. Condolence calls (shiva) will be 7:15 p.m. today at 3715 Martin's Yard in Sioux City. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Bill was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Sioux City, the only place he ever called home. After graduating from Central High, he proudly served our country abroad in World War II. Upon his return, he met the love of his life, Gert Nadler, to whom he was married for almost 60 years.

His connection to the Armed Services became lifelong. He owned and operated the Army Navy Surplus Outlet downtown for more than 50 years. He prided himself on his unmatchable merchandise. His store was a frequent stop for military men and women and the bikers going to Sturgis, S.D. Until his death, he loved that store.

The was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. Bill or "Papa" was adored by all who knew him. The sound of his beautiful whistling will stay in his family's hearts forever. His gentle nature and genuine kindness will never be forgotten.

His memory will be carried on by his children, Francene Zakalik of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Alan Zeplain of Houston, Texas; a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Simon Zakalik and Suzy Zeplain; and grandchildren, Lauren, Michael and Marc Zakalik and Daniel, Adam and Andrew Zeplain.

He is was preceded in death by his parents, Dora and Abraham; sister, Ida Fish and Tillie Fish; and his wife, Gertrude.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Congregation Beth Shalom Building Fund or the Parkinson's research charity of your choice.
