Fern C. Zellers, 94, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 20, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Morningside Assembly of God. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Mrs. Zellers, the former Fern Thomas, was born Jan. 18, 1913 in Obert, Neb,. the daughter of Frank I. and Emma (Stading) Thomas. She lived in rural Newcastle, Neb. while growing up. Fern married Donald G. Zellers on July 20, 1935 and to this union a son James was born.
Mrs. Zellers was a member of the First Assembly of God and later a member of Morningside Assembly of God. Fern worked for Solomon Foods for many years before working at JCPenney, retiring from there in 1973. She then took classes in nutrition at Iowa City to become a cook for Westwood Rest H Home. Throughout her life she gave a home to family as needs arose, having raised her niece Sandra Olson Moore from the age of 6. She was a caretaker from the time she was a young girl as her brothers and sister will attest.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law Sandra Zellers of Fort Dodge, Iowa: granddaughters Becky (Ted) Knudson of Webster City, Iowa and Ruth (Kerry) Koestler of North Mankato, Minn.; five great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a niece Sandra Olson (Wilson) Moore of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers Robert of Coon Rapids, Minn. and Howard (Dorothy) of Olivia, Minn.; a sister Lula Goetz of Carrolton, Mo.; sisters-in-law Hildegard Thomas of Dixon, Neb., Adarene (Alan) Eichhorn of Correctionville, Iowa and Babe Zellers of Peoria, Ariz. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Zellers in 1961; her son, the Rev. James Zellers in 1994; her parents Frank and Emma Thomas; brothers Frank Thomas and Paul Thomas and sisters Hazel Olson and Grace Perrin.
The family would like to thank her niece Gloria Zimmerman and her husband Carl for all of the care they have given Fern these past few years.
