Margaret A. York

SIOUX CITY -- Margaret A. York, 88, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center comforted by family.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Alva F. Hohl Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Margaret was born Feb. 13, 1920, in Sioux City, to Gillham A. and Callie (James) York. She received her education in the Sioux City Public School System, graduating from Central High School with the class of 1938. She continued her education at Wayne State Teachers College and received her degree from Morningside College. She also studied for a short while at Northern Colorado Stage College in Greeley. She was a teacher for 41 years, most recently teaching kindergarten at Crescent Park School for 27 years. She previously taught for nine years at Irving and five years in Lake View, Iowa.

She was a proud member of the Siouxland Senior Center and the Order of the Eastern Star Rose Croix Chapter 400. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for women in education. She was presented their Fidelis Alpha Golden Sister Award for 52 years membership in April 2008 at the state convention.

She enjoyed music and for several years was a member of the Sweet Adelines and the Siouxland Senior Center Chorus. In addition, she was a member of the bell choir at the Northern Hills Retirement Community.

She is survived by her brother, Col. Charles A. York (Ret.) and his wife, Ardeth of Xenia, Ohio; nephews, Gregory C. York and James L. York, both of Missoula, Mont., Maj. Kenneth R. York of Texas, and Andrew A. York of Ohio; three grandnephews, Spencer, Connor and Parker, all of Ohio; and a grandniece, Emma Margaret (her name sake) of Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her mother in August 1966; and her father in November 1978.

Memorials in her name may be offered to the June E. Nylen Cancer Center in Sioux City.
