SIOUX CITY -- Rev. Mr. Robert A. Wiskus, 70, of McCook Lake, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City. Celebrant will be Bishop R. Walker Nickless, bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City and many other priests and deacons from the Diocese of Sioux City concelebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. today, with a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Robert Wiskus was born Oct. 22, 1938, in Coon Rapids, Iowa, the son of William H. and Stella (Heim) Wiskus. Deacon Wiskus graduated from Swea City High School and Mankato Business College. He married Judith L. Strahorn on June 17, 1961, in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He owned and operated National Roofing for 38 years until ill health forced him to retire.
He was past president of Midwest Roofing Association and was a past member of the Downtown Rotary Club. He was involved and active in many community organizations throughout his life. Deacon Wiskus was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was ordained a Permanent Deacon in the Diocese of Sioux City on May 23, 1992, and was assigned to Sacred Heart Parish until ill health forced him to retire. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Judith of McCook Lake; four children, Deborah Hickman and her husband, Joe of Sioux Falls, S.D., and their children, Sarah and Rachel; Kevin Wiskus and his wife, Lieba of Centerville, Iowa, and their children, Katie, Annie, Heidi, Bob and Adele; Lt. Col. Bruce Wiskus and his wife, Katie of Northfield, Minn., and their children, Drew, Tia, Kailey and Luke; and Pamela Meylor and her husband, Kevin of Vermillion, S.D., and their children, Maddie, Patrick and Ellie; a brother, William Wiskus of Atlanta, Ga.; and two sisters, Marilyn Meyer and her husband, Ed of Ringstead, Iowa, and Sheryl Benne and her husband, Bernie of Swea City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Luvern; a sister, Dorothy; and his beloved granddaughter, Abigail Marie "Abbie" Wiskus.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Wiskus, Rick Schoonover, Todd Feltz, Steve Meyer, Matthew Strahorn and Todd Nashleanas. Honorary pallbearers will be Luke Wiskus, Robert Patrick Meylor, William Robert Wiskus, Gene Meier, Dean Albrecht and Maylon Chartier.
Memorials may be made in his name to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City.
