SIOUX CITY -- Paula M. Winkel, 67, of Sioux City died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at Premier Estates in Wayne, Neb., following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2009 at Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church, with the Rev. Brent Lingel officiating. There will be an honor guard by the St. Joseph School of Nursing Alumni. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Paula was born Jan. 6, 1942, in Chattanooga, Tenn., the daughter of Norman and Florence (Ronan) Dutton. She grew up in Billings, Mont., and graduated from Billings Central Catholic High School in 1959. She also graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1962.
She married David B. Winkel on Dec. 7, 1963, in Sioux City. She worked for St. Joseph Hospital, then Marian Health Center for many years.
She was a member of Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church and sang in the choir. She was active with the SIDS Foundation and PTA. She enjoyed bowling, golfing and attending her children's many activities.
Survivors include her husband, David Winkel of Belgrade, Neb.; nine children and spouses, Pamela and Lonnie Matthes of Wayne, Neb., David Paul and Audrey Winkel of Belgrade, Norman and Cammie Winkel of Sioux City, Daniel and May Winkel of Sioux City, Derek and Angel Winkel of Sioux City, Beth and Bryce Berg of West Des Moines, Christopher and Teri Winkel of Sioux City, Amy Winkel-Larison and Shawn Larison of Sioux City and Megan Winkel of Reno, Nev.; a brother, Dan Dutton and his wife, Lynn of Belfry, Mont.; three sisters, Rona Long and Maggie and her husband, Jim Hackendale, all of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Irene Hezmalhalch of Grants Pass, Ore.; and 18 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Jeffrey.
Pallbearers will be her sons, David Paul, Norman, Daniel, Derek, Christopher and Megan Winkel in honor of Paul's son, Jeffrey who is deceased.
