NORTH SIOUX CITY -- Robert A. "Bob" Wilson, 89, of North Sioux City died Monday, July 12, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Military rites will be conducted at the church. Visitation with the family will be 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Wilson was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Leroy and Sinai Kathryn (Kiley) Wilson. He attended St. Boniface Catholic High School in Davenport. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II from Sept. 10, 1940, to June 20, 1946, as a boatswain mate first class.
He married Mary Ann Whetstone on Feb. 13, 1957, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. She preceded him in death in January 2009. He had lived in Sioux City for the past 35 years. He was employed at various television and radio stations around the area. He retired from KTIV in 1985 as sports director and account executive, where he worked from April 22, 1974, until may 3, 1985.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association for more than 37 years. He served as the voice of the Iowa High School Basketball State Tournament for several years. He received Boy's Town 2009 Honorary Citizenship and a supporter of Victory in the Vancouver campaign of the USA Olympics in 2010. He enjoyed football, basketball and golfing.
Survivors include a son, Jeff Wilson of Tempe, Ariz.; two daughters, Ann Marie Wilson-McGrath of Waterloo, Neb., and Susan Wilson of Omaha; three grandchildren, Joshua McGrath, Luke Wilson and Chase Wilson; five great-grandchildren; five nieces and nephews in Sioux City and three in Chicago; and several close and personal friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Phil; his wife, Mary Ann; and a sister, Diane.
