Joan Willmott, 77, of Sioux City, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at her home. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2007 from 3-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 13, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Ray Hampton officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Joan was born on January 4, 1930, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was chosen (adopted) by Vyrle and Doreen (Holden) Crowell. Joan grew up and attended school in Rosalie, Nebraska, graduating in 1947. She then attended Wayne State College where she received her 2 year teaching certificate in 1949. On November 8, 1952, Joan married Gene Willmott at the First United Methodist Church in Sioux City. To this union twins Stacey and Scott were born on August 20, 1954. Joan later received her B.A. degree from Wayne State College in 1967, and then her M.A. degree from USD in 1977.
Joan taught at Roosevelt, Washington, Franklin and Lincoln schools in Sioux City. She also taught for one year in Sergeant Bluff and the last 17 years at Hoover where she retired in June of 1991. Her love for children and teaching let her tutor for 7 years after she retired.
She was a life member of NEA & ISEA. She also enjoyed bowling where she bowled with her team members for nearly 30 years. Joan loved all sports including her home state the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Joan is survived by her husband of 54 years and 9 months, Gene Willmott of Sioux City, IA; daughter, Stacey Willmott of Las Cruces, NM; and son, Scott Willmott of Sloan, IA; two grandchildren, Matt Willmott of Kansas City, MO; and Jill Willmott of Great Falls, MT; sister-in-law, Phyllis Hagensick and her husband Duane and their son Greg of Washington, IA; double cousin Don Smith and his wife Joan of Edwardsville, KS.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Wayne State Foundation or to Gene and Joan Willmott Scholarship Fund.
