Dorothy A. Wiggs, 94, of Sioux City died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2009 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 4 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Dorothy was born April 26, 1915, in Struble, Iowa, to William and Helene (Hoerling) Weis. She attended school in Struble. Dorothy married Hamilton Wiggs on July 3, 1931, in Struble. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1941. He died on July 9, 1976, in Sioux City.
Dorothy worked in the OB Department at St. Joseph Hospital for many years. Then in 1967, she returned to school to become an LPN. She continued to work at St. Joseph Hospital until retiring at the age of 62.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America. Dorothy enjoyed traveling to see her children and going to Las Vegas.
Survivors include three sons, James Wiggs and his wife, Joanne of Sioux City, Arlen Wiggs and his wife, Patricia of Sioux City, and David Wiggs and his wife, Elvira of Plainview, Texas; two daughters, Nancy Phillips and her husband, Thomas of Georgetown, Colo., and St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and Mary Trometer and her husband, Gary of Liberal, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Monica Wiggs of Sioux City; 29 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Charles; two brothers; and two sisters.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Trometer, Mark, Jerome, Craig and Dean Wiggs, James and Jonathan Phillips. There will be several honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made in her name to Hospice of Siouxland.
