SIOUX CITY -- George H. "Dick" Wessling, 70, of Sioux City passed away from lung cancer on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at Indian Hills Hospice Unit.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. today at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service today at the funeral home. Dick was born Nov. 7, 1937, in Sioux City, the son of Peter Wilmer and Irma (Burge) Wessling. He graduated from Central High School.
He married Gail F. Nielsen on Sept. 13, 1968, in South Sioux City. She died April 16, 2002, in Sioux City. Dick worked a variety of jobs in the Siouxland area. He was a lifelong Sioux City resident.
In earlier years, Dick participated in football, swimming, boxing, baseball and bowling. He continued to be an avid sports enthusiast throughout his life. He also loved to fish.
Survivors include a son, Russell Richard Wessling of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; two daughters, LaNora "Lori" Wessling and Samantha Scofield, both of Sioux City; a brother, Terry Michael Wessling of Sioux City; and five grandchildren, Brandon, Autumn, Cheyenne, Ashley and Brittani.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his ex-wife; and a sister, Carol Jurgensen.
