Robert Virgil Washburn, 78, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Dan Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City. Robert Virgil Washburn was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Sioux City, the son of Virgil and Marie (Wold) Washburn. He graduated mid-term from Sioux City East High School in 1948.

He married Mary Lou Howard on April 24, 1952, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City. He was employed as a cattle salesman at the Sioux City Stockyards. He was later employed with IBP in Dubuque until retiring in 1999.

In his free time, he loved to play softball, golf and watch the St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes. He attended Resurrection Catholic Church in Dubuque and was a member of the Dubuque Eagles Club.

Survivors include four sons, Ron and his wife, Brenda of Sioux City, Rob and his wife, Pam of Sioux City, Jim and his wife, Sheila of Omaha and Dan and Lori of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter and her husband, Sue and Jim Salazar of Parker, Colo.; a brother and his wife, Don "Joe" and Jan Washburn of Plano, Texas; a sister and her husband, Joyce and Chet Axthlem of Sioux City; and nine grandchildren, Michael of Sioux City, Ann and her husband, Jason of Augusta, Ga., Sara of Temecula, Calif., Bret of Sioux City, Kayla, Kelsey and Katie, all of Omaha and Josh and James, both of Parker, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his wife; and parents.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
