Ross D. Rosenkrans

Ross D. Rosenkrans, 94, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, at his residence following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Lee Williamson officiating. A Masonic service by the Tyrian Lodge 508 will follow the service. Military rites will conclude the services. Private graveside services will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Rosenkrans was born July 28, 1912, in Rochester, Minn., the son of Ralph and Laura Rosenkrans. He attended Sioux City schools, the National Business College and studied with the National Radio and Electronics Institute.

He married Yvonne "Bonnie" Alspach on Oct. 8, 1934. She died March 27, 1995. They had been married 60 years.

He was employed with Iowa Public Service Co. in several capacities, retiring in 1974 after 40 years of service.

As a young man, he was well known in musical circles. He preformed as a tenor soloist in several church choirs and the Sioux City Choral Society.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, stationed in Europe. He served with the 4th Infantry Division in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received and was cited with the Bronze Star Medal. He was discharged as a platoon sergeant. Prior to World War II, he served five years with 3rd Battalion, 133rd Infantry Regiment, Iowa Army National Guard.

He was a recipient of Gov. Branstad's Volunteer Award for volunteer work with Hospice of Siouxland and the Big Sioux Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, involving elder care. He was a member and past Master of Tyrian Masonic Lodge 508, Zadoc Council 24, Royal and Select Masters of Iowa, the York Rite and Scottish Rite Bodies of Masonry. He was a past Patron of Isis Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

He was a 50-year member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board and as a trustee. He was a former member of the Sioux City Engineers Club and Sioux City Toastmasters Club. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 54.

He is survived by a son and his wife, Richard and Beverly Rosenkrans of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Carole and Michael Zacher of Minneapolis; a sister, Evelyn Rosenkrans of Sioux City; five grandchildren and their spouses, Kurt and Danielle Rosenkrans, Tanya and Doug Krueger, Kim and Chuck Bruenner, Deb and Mike Smith and Barbara and Jon Sheflet; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Donald, William and Harold.
