Bonnie Mae Rice, 82, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Bonnie was born Jan. 31, 1925, on a farm near Howard, S.D., the daughter of Lloyd M. and Mabel (Noble) Port. She moved from Howard to Akron, Iowa in 1936. She graduated from Akron High School in 1943. She and her twin sister, Beulah, played basketball for Akron High School. After high school, she moved to Sioux City, where she worked at Palmer Candy.
She married Donald A. Rice on April 15, 1950, in Sioux City. She retired from Palmer Candy after working there for 43 years.
She was very active in the First Lutheran Church and many other clubs, where she held offices. She was a member of the Rachel Circle at First Lutheran Church. She was a lifetime 50 year member of Order of the Eastern Star Rose Croix Chapter, the American Legion Auxiliary, St. Luke's Auxiliary and the MEM-Sahibs. She was a former member of the Quota International and a former Sunday School teacher and Girl Scout leader. Family, friends and church were very important to her. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Rice of Sioux City; a son and his wife, D. Douglas and Jane Rice of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Carol and James "Pat" Schmidt of Omaha; three grandchildren, Eric and Jennifer Schmidt and Hilary Rice; her twin sister, Beulah Gant of Hawarden, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Port of Le Mars, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lloyd "Jack" Port; and a sister, Evelyn Smith.
