Larry K. Rees

SIOUX CITY -- Larry K. Rees, 71, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery. Larry was born June 22, 1938, the on of Kenneth and Vivian (Jenkins) Rees. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Leeds High School.

He married Carol Dempsey. She preceded him in death in 1997. He worked as an estimator for Haakinson and Beaty Company for 50-plus years until retiring in 2008.

He was a member of the Boys of 68 Club, the Sioux City Business Men's Group and the Elks. He also loved to golf.

Survivors include his daughter, Teri and her husband, John Sweeney of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; two grandchildren, Austin and Taylor; longtime companion, Phyllis Kurzak of Sioux City; her daughters, Amy Kurzak and Tammi and her husband, Kelly Granaas and their children, Olivia, Annika and Calvin; a brother, Del Rees and his wife, Linda of Sioux City; two sisters, Darlene Valencia of Eline, Nev., and Debbie and her husband, Randy Grudle of Sidney, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol; and three brothers, Tommy, Tony and Kenneth.
