Wilma Jean Raaen

Wilma Jean Raaen passed away Friday, June 6, 2008 at age 80. Wilma was known her entire life by her family and friends as Billie. Raised by her parents Fenton and Laura Thoma in Leeds, Billie was a lifelong resident of Sioux City, born here October 11, 1927. Along with her four siblings, Billie attended Leeds High School, graduating as salutatorian of her class in 1945. In 1951, Billie married Stanley Odell Raaen. Their son, Dale, was born in 1953. The couple resided briefly in California until their divorce when Billie returned to live in Sioux City.

Billie began a long career at Swift and Company where she worked as a bookkeeper. When Swift closed its doors, she finished her working career at the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce. Billie enjoyed bowling and golf and embraced the game of bridge when she retired, playing several times a week.

Billie was devoted to her son, Dale, and was much loved by her many nieces and nephews who sought out her easy-going company and sometimes her common sense advice. Often they were treated to her delicious homemade fudge and a bowl of buttery popcorn.

Billie is survived by her son Dale Raaen, his wife Cindy and daughter Kelsey of Lafayette, California; her sister Jeri Lavin and husband Tom of Bayonne, New Jersey; her sister Jackie Hutmacher and husband Bob of Sioux City; her brother Sonny Thoma and wife Delores of Diamond Bar, California; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Fenton and Laura Thoma, her sister Pat Rubel and her granddaughter Allison Raaen.

A private remembrance service will be held for close family and friends.
