MOVILLE, Iowa -- Lloyd Elmer Powell, 83, of Moville died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 13, 2008 at United Methodist Church in Hornick, Iowa. The body will be cremated. Private graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.
Lloyd was the son of Lloyd Victor and Mabel Elizabeth (Bolte) Powell. He was born one mile east and one mile south of Climbing Hill, Iowa, on his grandparents' farm on Friday, Feb. 13, 1925. He served in the Philippines during World War II. His awards and decorations include the Philippine Liberation Medal with two Stars, the Bronze Arrowhead Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart.
He had done a lot of traveling before his marriage on May 5, 1947, to Charlotte Sweisberger, the daughter of Charles and Henrietta Sweisberger. They just celebrated 61 years of marriage.
He worked for Swift Packing before joining the U.S. Post Office for many years as a mail carrier and in the maintenance department. One fond memory from his mail carrying years was when his first grandchild was born. One block on his route, Sixth Avenue, had a baby shower; every house had something. He lived for many years just outside of Sioux City on Morningside Avenue (old Highway 141). He moved in 1971 to their rural home north of Hornick, Iowa. He went back to school in 2001 to received his general education diploma from Western Iowa Tech Community College.
He raised flowers, garden, chickens, goats, geese and three grandchildren. He retired on Oct. 1, 1983. He retired a second time from Nutra-Flo. He was a member of the American Legion Hindman Steele Post 492 in Hornick, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; a son and his wife, David and Peggy Powell of Hornick; a granddaughter and her husband, Angela and Michael Mooney of Hornick; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Bieler and his fiancee, Amber Reese of Sioux City, Catlin M. Bieler and Kelsey Kelsheimer of Windom, Minn., and Sarah and Peter Mooney of Hornick; a grandson, Jeffrey Powell and Mishelle Even of Moville; great-grandchildren, Shelby and Colby Powell of Sioux City; a granddaughter and her husband, Nicole and Troy Kelsheimer of Moville; great-grandchildren, Brittany and Tyler Kelsheimer of Moville and Anissa Ladwig of Ida Grove, Iowa; two brothers, Lester of Sioux City and Richard and his wife, Jane of Republic, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Joyce Prescott and her husband of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
