Walter G. Plendl

Walter G. Plendl, 60, of Sioux City died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, from an illness with pancreatic cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Gerald Bruhn and Kenny Hsu officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Mr. Plendl was born Feb. 1, 1946, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Anton and Doris (Leonard) Plendl. He grew up in Hinton, Iowa, and graduated from Union High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict from 1964 to 1968.

He married Barbara J. Stough on June 1, 1968, in Neptune, Iowa. He worked for Metz Baking Co., now Sara Lee, for 26 years, starting in 1978 and retiring in 2005 due to ill health. He had also been involved in farming for many years.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and served as church treasurer from 1984 to 2006.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Sioux City; a daughter, Brenda Peterson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a son and his wife, Chad and Taryn Plendl of Maryland; two sisters, Bonnie and her husband, Leonard Janke of Pender, Neb., and Mary Plendl of Moab, Utah; and three grandchildren, Brianda, Caitlin and Aila.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ernest Plendl.

Pallbearers will be Gary Stough, Rich Plendl, Keith Plendl, Dwight Plendl, Jack Junck and Terry "Mac" McManigal.
