Ernest E. Pickering, 86, of Sioux City, formerly of Belmond, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond. Burial will be in Belmond City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 6 p.m. prayer service with Rev. Roger Madden officiating, and a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. by Landmark Lodge 103, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Ernest was born July 14, 1920, in Manley, Iowa, to Walter and Josephine (Ciner) Pickering. He graduated from high school in Mason City, Iowa. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Okinawa and playing as a member of the U.S. Army Band.
He married Edna Dettman on Sept. 3, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He worked as a plant manager at F.W. Means Laundry for 23 years and later as a housing inspector for the city of Sioux City for seven years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Landmark Lodge 103, Consistory and the Abu Bekr Brass Band. Ernest loved to fish and listen to and play music. He enjoyed his home and yard work. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Edna of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Jerry and Susan Pickering of Indiana, Pa.; a cousin, Shirley Koci of Manley, Iowa; three grandchildren, Mike, Sara and Kathy; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
