Jean M. Peck

Jean M. Peck, 80, of Sioux City, passed away Monday, March 14, 2011 at her residence. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Friday, March 18, 2011 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend Dan Doran officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, March 17, 2011 from 4 to 8 P.M. with the family present from 6 to 8 P.M. and a prayer service at 7 P.M. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Jean was born the daughter of Harold and Pauline (Inman) Smith on June 21, 1930 in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Central High School and later obtained a nursing degree from St. Vincent School of Nursing. Jean married Loren J. Peck on January 6, 1950 in Vermillion, South Dakota. The couple were lifelong Sioux City residents.

Jean worked at the former St. Vincent Hospital/Marian Health Center for 48 years. She started there when she was 13 years old washing dishes and worked her way into a long and meaningful nursing career, retiring in 1989. She was a role model in nursing that inspired others including her daughter and daughter-in-laws to go into the nursing field to continue her legacy of acceptance, kindness and strength.

Grandma Jean loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her positive energy made every day a blessing. She enjoyed family vacations to Okoboji and Lake of the Ozarks of which memories were made that we will treasure always. She loved dancing with her family, reading and playing with her grandchildren and taking care of her pets. She taught us to embrace life and value family. Our most treasured memories will be of our sunset cruises with her and Grandpa's smiling faces enjoying the moment with those they loved so dearly.

Jean is survived by four sons, Greg (Donielle) Peck of Sioux City, Loren Peck, Jr. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Charlie (Diane) Peck of Omaha, Nebraska, and Dave (Sherrill) Peck of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one daughter, Cindy (Steve) Monell of Fort Collins, Colorado; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years, Loren Sr.; her brother, Jerry; and her sister, Arlene.
