Darrell James Peck

Darrell James Peck, 80, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, June 13, 2008.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Whitfield United Methodist Church, 1319 West 5th St., with the Rev. Michelle Williamson officiating. A luncheon will be provided downstairs in the church after the service, followed by a private family entombment at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, 822 Jennings St. Visitation will resume one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Memorials are to be directed to Whitfield United Methodist Church.

Darrell was born on March 27, 1928, in Sioux City but was raised by his grandmother, "Nannie" in Hartington, Neb., alongside numerous aunts that simply adored him. Darrell attended Wayne State College. He served his country as a merchant marine.

He moved to Sioux City where he met Shirley Grigsby and they married on Sept. 25, 1948 and had three sons. Darrell was employed at Roberts Dairy as a "Milk Man" for 22 years. He joined the Sioux City Transit Company as a bus driver and was later promoted as a supervisor, from which he retired after 13 years of service. Darrell was an active member of Whitfield United Methodist Church for 50 years. Darrell loved his church.

He was a member of the Northwest Iowa Retired Teamsters, where he bowled for 44 years on the Union League. Darrell could truly 'cut-a-rug' being a member of the Whitfield Dance Club numerous years ago; family remembers him as a wonderful dancer. He was a non-active student pilot, a coach of the First Federal, Salsness Motors and Knights of Columbus junior and Little League baseball teams, where he coached his own sons, and nightly you could find Darrell engrossed in a challenging crossword puzzle. Darrell was loving and caring to his family. He was a blood bank donor. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Sioux City; No. 1 son, Jeffrey Peck and wife, Mary Ann of Sioux City, No. 2 son, Tracy Peck and his wife, Ann of Hudson, Wis., and No. 3 son, Laddy Peck and his wife, Trudy of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, June Zody and her husband, George of Glendive, Mont.; a sister, Patricia Beecher of Omaha; close cousins; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; and many close cousins.

Darrell was preceded in death by his grandmother "Nannie"; mother Mildred, stepfather Sam (Larry) Dvorkin, numerous aunts; and a great grandson, JaVante.
