Stanley Floyd Pecaut, 102, lifelong resident of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Entombment will be in Logan Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Stan was born Sept. 2, 1904 in Sioux City, the son of John and Mary Adele (Coffey) Pecaut. He attended Sioux City schools and graduated from Central High in 1922. He then worked for the Northwestern Railroad and L.G. Everist Company. Stan married N. Edna "Eddie" Oien in 1931. They were married 56 years until Eddie passed away in 1987.
Mr. Pecaut started his own business, Pecaut Industrial Supply Company in 1936 at 519 Pearl St. He expanded to a new location at 1819 Fourth St. in 1940 as Pecaut Equipment Company. He further expanded the business to Sioux Falls, S.D. in 1946. For over 60 years he serviced the construction and industrial markets of Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota with products and services.
Stan was a long-time member of the Sioux City Engineers Club and the Associated Equipment Dealers Association (AED) locally and nationally. Active in the local meat-packing industry, Stan was part of the initial investment and establishment of Sioux City Dressed Beef, Sioux City Dressed Pork, IBP, Needham Packing Co. and Floyd Valley Packing Co. Mr. Pecaut was an investor in and promoter of local real estate, and helped in the campaign to move the YMCA from Pierce Street into a new building on Nebraska Street. He was on the board of Sunrise Manor, and was a long-time and oldest member of the Sioux City Downtown Rotary Club where he was honored as a "Paul Harris Fellow."
Stan was also an active member of First Lutheran Church, serving on many committees and areas of leadership. He and his wife loved music and were patrons of the arts in Sioux City, supporting the Sioux City Symphony, Sioux City Community Theatre, Concert Course, and the Orpheum Theatre, where their support helped save and restore the Wurlitzer Organ.
He was a member of the Sioux City Boat Club for many years, and a member of the Sioux City Country Club for over 55 years. He loved golf and played actively until well into his 90s.
Stan was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and great-grandfather.
He is survived by four daughters, Connie (George) Wilen of Scottsdale, Ariz., Marjorie (John) Matkovich of San Diego, Calif., Linda Thomas of Scottsdale, and Sue (Rick) Stark of Madison, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Steve (Lisa) Wilen, Kerry (Paul) Schneider, Kris Brown, Dr. Robert (Rhonda) Pendleton, Wendy Pendleton, Tom (Sarah) Thomas II, Amanda (Ross) Thomas Carmichael, Colin Stark, and Megan Stark; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne (Dorothy) Pecaut of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Darrel Pecaut of Sioux City; and his very dear friend Mrs. Jane Miller of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Eddie, his brother Harold Pecaut, and his sisters Teeny Hood and LaVonne Struck.
Memorials may be directed to the organ fund at the Orpheum Theatre, First Lutheran Church, and Hospice of Siouxland.
